That is why the First Year Collective begins with your maternity session. It gives us the chance to document the very beginning of your baby’s story, then continue capturing each chapter as they grow from newborn to one year.

As a Minneapolis maternity, newborn, and family photographer, I love creating photographs that feel timeless, natural, and full of connection. The First Year Collective was created to tell the full story of your baby’s first year instead of treating each milestone like a separate moment.

It Starts Before Baby Arrives

Your maternity session is where the story begins.

This season deserves to be remembered for more than the changes in your body. It is about the way your family feels right now—the excitement, the tenderness, the waiting, and the love that already exists for someone you have not even met yet.

Your maternity session can take place in the studio, outdoors during one of Minnesota’s beautiful seasons, or in another setting that feels meaningful to you.

We will plan everything together, from location and wardrobe to the overall feel of your session, so your maternity portraits become a natural first chapter in the collection we create throughout your baby’s first year.

From Newborn Days to One Year

Once your baby arrives, everything begins to change quickly.

The tiny newborn who fits perfectly in your arms will suddenly be smiling, sitting, crawling, standing, and before you know it, celebrating a first birthday.

We begin this part of the Collective with your newborn session, documenting those sleepy early days when everything still feels brand new. Tiny fingers and toes. The way your baby curls into your chest. The quiet way you look at them when you think no one is watching.

As your baby grows, we will meet again for milestone sessions that reflect exactly who they are in that season.

Maybe that means documenting a sitter milestone when they are suddenly full of personality. Maybe it is a session filled with crawling, belly laughs, and little hands reaching for you.

By the time we reach their one-year session, that tiny newborn has become an entirely different little person, and you will have a full collection showing just how much changed along the way.

More Than a Single Photography Session

One of my favorite parts of the First Year Collective is getting to know your family over the course of the year.

Instead of meeting your photographer once and trying to fit every meaningful photograph into a single session, we have time to let your story unfold naturally.

Each session can feel relaxed and playful, with space for cuddles, movement, breaks, and genuine connection.

Whether we are photographing your baby in the studio, outside in the soft Minnesota light, or incorporating details that feel uniquely yours, the goal is always the same: to create photographs that feel like your family.

Planning What to Wear for Each Session

Another benefit of choosing a full-year photography experience is that we can thoughtfully plan the look and feel of every session together.

My client closet is available for maternity and family sessions, with carefully selected pieces that photograph beautifully and complement the light, timeless aesthetic of my work.

For your baby, you are welcome to bring something meaningful from home, or we can incorporate pieces from my baby wardrobe along with simple wraps and swaddles.

I tend to recommend light neutrals, soft pastels, natural textures, and classic pieces that will still feel beautiful years from now.

The goal is not for every session to look exactly the same. It is for the full collection to feel cohesive while still reflecting each season of your baby’s first year.

Why the First Year Is Worth Preserving

Because you will not remember all of it.

You will remember the big things—the day they were born, their first smile, their first steps, their first birthday.

But the tiniest details are often the first ones to fade.
