One of the most common questions I receive before a newborn session is, “What should we wear?” The good news is that choosing outfits for your newborn photos doesn’t have to feel stressful. A little planning goes a long way toward creating timeless, cohesive images that you’ll love for decades.
My Minneapolis newborn studio is designed with soft, natural light and a clean, neutral aesthetic, so your clothing choices can beautifully complement that style. Here are my favorite tips for dressing the whole family for your studio newborn session.

When it comes to newborn photography, less is more. Light, neutral tones photograph beautifully and keep the focus exactly where it belongs—on your growing family.
These soft shades reflect light beautifully and help create the bright, airy look my Minneapolis studio newborn sessions are known for.

I recommend avoiding bold colors, neon shades, busy patterns, large logos, and graphics whenever possible. These details can distract from the emotion, connection, and tiny newborn features that deserve to remain the focus of your gallery.

Your newborn session is just as much about documenting your motherhood journey as it is about photographing your new baby.
I always recommend choosing a dress that feels comfortable, flattering, and easy to move in. Many new moms are still healing after delivery, so comfort is incredibly important.

Dresses with forgiving silhouettes tend to photograph beautifully while helping you feel confident and relaxed. Soft fabrics and gentle movement also add a beautiful, natural dimension to your images.
My client closet is available to all newborn clients and includes a curated collection of timeless dresses that photograph beautifully in the studio.
I’ll help you select an option that complements your family, feels comfortable after delivery, and fits the soft, timeless style of my editing perfectly.

Dad’s outfit can be wonderfully simple. A light-colored or neutral button-down, henley, or fitted sweater paired with khaki pants or light-colored chinos creates a classic, polished look without feeling overly formal.

Avoid dark athletic clothing, graphic T-shirts, and bright colors whenever possible. Keeping Dad’s outfit understated helps maintain the soft, timeless feel of the full gallery.
Older siblings should coordinate with the rest of the family without matching exactly. The goal is to create a cohesive color palette while still allowing each child’s personality to shine through.
Simple dresses with soft textures and neutral colors photograph beautifully. A delicate sweater can add lovely layering and texture while keeping the overall look timeless.
Khaki pants, overalls, linen shorts depending on the season, or neutral pants paired with a simple knit shirt or button-up create a polished, timeless look.
Comfort is key. When children feel comfortable in their clothing, they’re much happier during photos, and that always shines through in the final images.

Your newborn is already perfect just as they are.
You’re welcome to bring a special outfit if there’s one you would love photographed, but there is absolutely no need to purchase anything specifically for your session.

Everything has been carefully selected to coordinate with the soft, classic style of my photography, making the session completely stress-free for new parents.

The choice is yours, but choose either barefoot or shoes—never socks alone.
Bare feet create a relaxed, intimate feeling that photographs beautifully, especially during family images on the studio bed or while everyone is cuddling together.
If shoes are preferred, choose simple neutral footwear and remove athletic shoes whenever possible.

The most beautiful newborn photographs aren’t about perfectly coordinated outfits. They’re about connection.
By choosing soft colors, comfortable clothing, and simple styling, your family’s love becomes the focus of every image. Years from now, your photographs will feel just as timeless as the day they were taken.
