Planning your Minneapolis maternity photoshoot is one of the sweetest parts of preparing to meet your baby. As the excitement builds, many expecting mothers begin thinking about all the little details—from choosing the perfect location to deciding what to wear. If you’re feeling unsure about your outfit, you’re certainly not alone. In fact, it’s one of the very first questions I receive after a session is booked.
The good news is that choosing your wardrobe doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. My goal is to help you select pieces that not only photograph beautifully but also allow you to feel comfortable, confident, and like the very best version of yourself. After all, your maternity session isn’t about wearing the trendiest dress—it’s about celebrating this remarkable season of motherhood in a way that feels authentic to you.

When clients ask me what they should wear, my answer almost always begins the same way: choose something that makes you feel beautiful. Pregnancy is an incredible journey, but it’s also a season of constant change. Some days you feel amazing, while others leave you wondering if anything in your closet still fits quite right. The outfit you choose should bring confidence, not added stress.
Long, flowing dresses remain one of my favorite choices because they photograph so beautifully. They create soft movement as you walk, catch the light in an incredibly flattering way, and naturally highlight your growing baby bump. If your style is a little more modern, a fitted knit dress can create an equally elegant look that emphasizes your silhouette while still feeling effortless. Neither option is better than the other—the right choice is simply the one that feels most like you.

One of the reasons I often recommend soft, neutral colors is because they allow the focus to remain exactly where it belongs: on you, your family, and the anticipation of meeting your little one. Shades like cream, ivory, warm beige, sage green, dusty blue, soft gray, and muted blush blend beautifully with Minnesota’s natural landscapes throughout every season.
Whether we’re photographing your session in an open field, beside one of the Twin Cities’ beautiful lakes, or surrounded by colorful fall foliage, these timeless tones create images that feel refined and cohesive without drawing attention away from the emotion of the moment. Years from now, you’ll be grateful you chose a look that feels classic rather than tied to a passing trend.

One of my favorite things about maternity photography is that it doesn’t require much to create something beautiful. In fact, simplicity often photographs best. Clothing with soft textures like linen, cotton, knits, or subtle lace adds visual interest without becoming distracting, allowing your connection and growing family to remain the focus of every image.
I generally recommend avoiding large logos, bold graphics, or busy patterns. While they may seem fun in the moment, they can quickly date your photographs and compete with the genuine emotion we’re hoping to preserve. Timeless, understated pieces have a way of letting the story speak for itself.

If your partner or older children will be joining your maternity session, there’s no need for everyone to wear identical outfits. Instead, I encourage families to think in terms of coordinating colors rather than matching exactly. A palette of complementary tones creates a cohesive look while still allowing each person’s personality to shine through.
Soft combinations like cream and sage, ivory with dusty blue, or warm neutrals paired with gentle earth tones photograph beautifully together and create a natural, effortless feeling. The goal is for your family to look connected without appearing overly styled, allowing your relationships to remain at the heart of every photograph.

One thing many people don’t realize is how closely your wardrobe and location work together. A flowing dress looks incredible in an open field as it catches the breeze, while a sleek, fitted dress pairs beautifully with downtown Minneapolis for a more modern and editorial feeling.
Soft neutrals look stunning beside Minnesota’s lakes, while cozy layers complement the rich colors of fall and the quiet beauty of a snowy winter landscape. As we plan your session together, I’ll help you choose wardrobe pieces that work naturally with your location so the entire gallery feels thoughtful and intentional.

One of my favorite things about photographing maternity sessions in Minnesota is watching how dramatically the landscape changes throughout the year. Every season offers something uniquely beautiful, and your wardrobe can help enhance that natural backdrop.
Spring pairs beautifully with flowing fabrics, delicate textures, and light layers that move gracefully in the breeze. Summer sessions are perfect for breathable dresses that catch the warm evening light, while autumn welcomes cozy knits, rich textures, and earthy tones that complement the changing leaves. Winter, perhaps surprisingly, creates some of the most elegant images of all, with long sleeves, soft wraps, and neutral outerwear standing beautifully against fresh snow.
Rather than choosing your outfit first and hoping it works with the location, I always encourage my clients to think about both together. When your wardrobe and surroundings complement one another, the entire gallery feels intentional from beginning to end.

Shopping for a new outfit during pregnancy isn’t always at the top of anyone’s to-do list, which is one of the reasons I love offering a curated client closet. Having access to dresses that have been carefully selected for maternity photography takes so much of the guesswork out of the planning process.
These pieces are chosen specifically because they flatter a growing bump, photograph beautifully, and help create the timeless aesthetic my clients love. It allows you to arrive at your session feeling prepared without the pressure of purchasing something you may only wear once.

From helping you choose the perfect location to selecting wardrobe pieces that photograph beautifully, I’m here to make your maternity experience simple, enjoyable, and completely personalized. Together, we’ll create timeless images that celebrate this incredible chapter and preserve memories your family will cherish for generations.
