There’s something so special about summer evenings in Minnesota—the warm sunshine, the soft breeze coming off the lake, and those long golden hours that seem to make everything feel a little more magical.

This beautiful family session on the beaches of Lake Minnetonka was the perfect example of why I love photographing families outdoors in Minnesota.

As a Minnesota family photographer, I’m always looking for locations that allow families to simply be together. The beach gave us the perfect backdrop for this session while leaving plenty of room for movement, play, and those genuine little moments that make family photographs feel like you.

Lake Minnetonka is one of my favorite places for family photography because it offers so much variety without feeling overly complicated. The shoreline, tall grasses, sandy beaches, and beautiful Minnesota light create a timeless setting that photographs beautifully.

For this session, we spent our time along the beach letting the kids explore while I captured the connection between everyone. Rather than asking the family to constantly pose, I love giving families gentle direction and then allowing the moments in between to unfold naturally.

There were plenty of smiles, snuggles, playful moments, and quiet interactions—all of the things that make a family session feel authentic.

The Beauty of an Outdoor Minnesota Family Session

One of my favorite things about photographing families outdoors is that the environment becomes part of the story.

The beach wasn’t simply a backdrop for these photographs. It gave the kids somewhere to run, something to explore, and the entire family a chance to slow down and enjoy an evening together.

This is especially important when photographing young children. Instead of expecting them to stand perfectly still and smile at the camera, I want them to have fun. Some of my favorite photographs happen when everyone forgets the camera is even there.

That might mean walking hand-in-hand along the shoreline, playing in the sand, picking up rocks, or simply cuddling together while watching the sunset.
